[5 Stars] I love it. Haunting and mysterious and the questions and ideas expressed in this are just so thought provoking. Also. I happen to really enjoy post-war fiction and in a lot of ways this is that.

always a treat to indulge in woolf's steam of conciousness style as a contrast to the standard chronological narratives so often seen in fiction. i've got a love-hate relationship with it because, on the one side, the introspection forces you to know the characters quite intimately and makes you think about your own values and perceptions — but doing so means you have to pour so much attention to the book.
interjecting a long passage about a character's supposed motivations with a description of what another character in the current moment is jarring makes it challenging to keep track of who's who. i took several breaks from this in the process of reading it and lost sight of several key motifs.
would reread this but i'd need to so as a group read or under someone who's had to overanalyze this for an english class because it's too complex for a casual reading-in-bed session

why was she turned on by the guy predicting the weather(which was somehow the same every time)
maybe im not smart enough to “get” this book but virginia woolf better be rolling in her grave for wasting my time like this. this shit sucks.

Enjoyable, but I think my enjoyment of it was limited by the audiobook format. Not because of the performance, but because it is a complicated and sometimes hard to grasp story that I found hard to pay attention to through audiobook. So perhaps an unfair rating, as I think it would be rated higher if I read it as a physical book.
unapologetic use of commas and long sentences, detailed description of the sea, multiple povs, etc…it all speaks to me.
its my first book by woolf. her writing style was hard to grasp at first. it wasnt until my second attempt to read the book from the top did i start comprehending it more smoothly (though there were times when i still end up confused). woolf effectively reflected how the mind works on her writing. its complexity made it a more fulfilling read.

mrs ramsay is my home girl i love her i’d behave exactly like her she’s the backbone of everything which is strange because that character was based on woolf’s mother
argh the stream of consciousness writing style was a bit of an acquired taste to be honest
lily and mrs ramsay best duo
i can def see woolf’s mental illness jumping out in some of words which makes sense because it feels almost autobiographical
would re-read

I guess Virginia is just not for me. I felt a bit overwhelmed during the long first part, The Window, with it's dense prose, and had a hard time buying in with its non-existent plot. It felt like I was drowning in quicksand. To further slow my progress, at first I took the time to jump to the back of my book to reference some of the 161 notes in the book. I've never encountered a fiction book with that many notes. It was distracting.
I found the last part, The Lighthouse, to be much more readable and decipherable as there was actually something happening, and it was full of turmoil and melancholia. Overall, I thought the novel was just OK and I'm giving two stars for that reason.

This book requires time and a good mood. It has beautiful chains of thoughts that keep coming, like waves to a lighthouse. I will need to re-read it properly again.
