Given the reviews this book is getting, I can't work out if I'm having a serious sense of humour failure or if I'm the kid who points out the Emperor has no clothes.

In this book Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect return to an Earth which has mysteriously reappeared, having been destroyed in the first book in the series, Arthur meets his potential soul mate, and teaches her how to fly before the 3 of them start another round of adventures.

All this is fine, and if you like the 3 previous books in the series, you'll probably like the humour in previous books, you'll probably like this book too. It's just if you read 3 of the books in a row (or very quickly one after another), it'll feel a little "one notey" after a while.

Okay, I just really didn't care for this book, for starters it is set almost exclusively on Earth, which shouldn't be possible and is never really explained, although I am pretty sure I get it. Arthur is really the only character from the series here, Ford plays a small part throughout, but way too small. Zaphod and Trillian are not here at all, and even Marvin only makes a small cameo at the end.

It is a sci-fi book, but man is it boring. It is a romance between Arthur and a woman named Fenchurch. The writing is still the same humorous Adams writing and that is what drove me on, and the only thing that is keeping me in the series at this point, but many I wanted to quit this book.

At this point in the series proceed with caution.

I fell off this series a little and had forgotten certain absurdities. Still fun tone and a great series but not my fave thing ever.
