Great book! An honest personal account of Sergeant Nicolas "Irv" Irving Army Ranger. He was a special ops sniper in the 3rd Ranger Battalion. I like how this book is straight to the point and doesn't spend a large portion on childhood/training. He covers those stories seamlessly as flashbacks. He is candid about his fears such as fear of heights or fear of letting his comrades down. There are stories that show cultural difference during his deployment in Afghanistan, some rather shocking (Man-love Thursdays). There is also a good military dog story.

Fairly gruesome and raw, but a quick read.

Pretty interesting autobiography. I've been trying to branch out and not just read my usual fiction and a book club challenge for the month of January was biography/autobiography. So here I am with The Reaper. Many parts will be hard for the average person to read because it's a true story and not a pretty one. I'm glad I took the time to read his story.

Autobiographical account of Army Ranger Nick Irving, mainly covering his deployment to Afghanistan as a sniper. Straightforward description of events, including a bit of reminiscing about his growing up years, but mostly about his rather action packed deployment.

The Reaper is a great first person account of both the war in the Middle East and the nuances of being a military sniper. While Mr. Irving's writing style can jump around a bit, personally I think it's a great first outing for someone whose first talent was serving his country in combat - the writing will only get better as he gets more experienced in it. The content though is eye-opening to the day to day in Iraq and Afghanistan, the fight against the Taliban, and the degree to which our men and women put themselves in harm's way day after day. A great read, and I salute Mr. Irving for his service and for a job well done on his first book!
