What a sad book! I didn't really expect it to end the way it did.

Kids that want a sad book will read this probably in one sitting and the reluctant readers will enjoy the length.

I'm not very good with books like this.
I just don't get the point. Why did it have to end that way - what use was it? All that narrative effort to show that Joseph could be better than everyone thought he was, could be better than even he thought he was, and no. Was it realistic from an abusive dad? Yeah, probably. But goddamn it I think it would have been more powerful for me had he grown up and priced everything wrong. That being a dad at fourteen was not the end of his life. That he could rise above an abusive father. That foster parents really could make a difference.
So, I'm kind of mad. It was quite good, but I'm not good with tragic endings.
