A powerful story exploring mental strength, empathy and compromise in the most difficult circumstances.

I immediately liked and rooted for Binti our protagonist and enjoyed the direction Dr Nnedi Okorafor wanted to take us. I went in knowing nothing and prefer it that way so was not thinking about anticipating anything just watching the story unfold.

The world building and clear cultures and species set up in her feels so real. Can't wait to keep reading

This book was perfect to pick up to fulfill some last-minute readathon prompts, it's short, was on my TBR, and I had heard a lot of people really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, for me, it fell flat. It's a novella, so by design, there isn't a ton of detail, but for this type of story, that just didn't work me. I felt like so much wasn't explained or was skipped over. Overall, it just felt rushed. This story could have really been fleshed out into a whole novel and I feel like I would have rated it much higher. I most likely won't continue the series.

This book counts for Popsugar 2022 for a Hugo award winner, for r/Fantasy Bingo 2022 for a book set in space, and for Orilium Lightfall at Old Favor Pass for a visit to Occult Premonitions (sci-fi).

I liked the theme and character and concepts introduced, but I would have liked it if the story had more space to develop and explore major events and what they meant to Binti. The ending where
Binti becomes fast friends with the jellyfish dude despite the very very recent mass murder
felt abrupt and underexplained, and really took away from this for me.

I'm definitely going to read the other installments in the series, though, and check out the author's other work too.
