oh and the earlier drawings in this book... oh my god i was genuinely freaked out. i was reading it digitally so everytime i knew there was gon be a new drawing in the next page, i legit had to turn my brightness all thw way down and keep my tablet screen like inches further away so i didnt get nightmares when i saw the drawings. teddy's drawings were legit scarier than the professionally drawn ones.
oh my god i actually love mallory sm. yes i found it annoying that she didnt tell adrian or anyone else the whole truth but at the same time i lowk understand

'why didn't you tell me teddy was a girl' WHAT? THE? FUCK? MY JAW LITERALLY DROPPED OPEN. AND THE CLUES IN BETWEEN. I JUST KNEW SOME OF THE CONVOS HAD CLUES THAT WOULD LEAD UP TO THE ACTUAL PLOT TWIST CAUSE I KEPT THINKING 'a good writer never just writers filler stuff. EVERYTHING has a purpose' and i was right!!! jason rekulak i love u
no but genuinely i could have never and i mean NEVER predicted the plot twist. it was so so so so so so so damn good. what the fuck.
this book deserves all the hype it gets and more. i would DEFINITELY recommend. and i will surely be checking out other jason rekulak books in the future.

This book gave me so much awful anxiety. It was also very over top. It was not for me.

I was going to keep the short, but I have more to say. This book is terrible. The main character is so annoying. The last like 25% reads like a right wing fever dream fantasy. I'm horrified that this book has so many reviews raving about it. It's transphobic and fatphobic to start. There's several right wing dog whistles throughout this. The twists and reveals are not good, and I think people are confusing shock value with good writing.
Last thing, this book takes place in Jersey but it's published as taking place in Philadelphia. 1- that's not Philly. 2- if the main character said "I grew up in South Philly" or "in South Philly you get used to this" or any other weird, untrue generalization about that that neighborhood one more time, I was gonna scream.
Also spending over half the book convinced that "Anya" is "Annie" is insulting to the readers. That red herring was terrible and obvious.

Such an incredible and unique plot!!! The realization of what was really going on was mind blowing. Also, the positive outlook on faith and Christianity was a breath of fresh air, I’ve actually never encountered that in a fiction novel before.
