Let's call it a 3.5. This book is....long. It is so, so, so, so, so long. While jam-packed with every minute detail of the investigations, trials and aftermath, I feel that it could still be edited. Bugliosi, the author and prosecutor of the Tate-LaBianca murders, rehashes information previously established a few different times and I think it wouldn't have been so long to read if the reader was told information once.
If you've ever been remotely fascinated in this case, this is the book to start with.
I will say I appreciated Bugliosi's voice as the narrator.

I kept on putting this book off because I thought no chance I'll enjoy a book about something that's been already talked about so much in every possible way.
As it happened I started watching Aquarius, and that just made me so epically curious about some of the details and manson characters that I finally decided to pick up this book. Little did I know I'd be struggling to make time to sleep and do basic chores because of how gripping this book was. I mean, for real. I had no idea that there was so much to know about this case, and the sheer audacity and just how despicable this whole clan was. There is just soooo much to know and read about this case! And the fact that it is written by the prosecutor of this case adds do much authenticity and front row view of what actually happened.
Probably one of my top fav books of this year. I literally could not put this down, like, seriously. Finished this beast of a book in 4 days, and all well worth it. One hundred percent recommended even if you are remotely interested in this case. Man, this was super!

Wow this book was crazy. It was so incredibly detailed and I feel like I know every aspect of the murders in detail now though. I like how a lot of people affected by this case or by Manson did get a happy ending. His followers were under mind control basically and the ones who didn’t participate in the murders deserve to have happy lives. I am glad to see that once severed from Manson the ones who committed the crimes show remorse and are doing what they can to show how evil he is to people who don’t believe that. Bugliosi is an incredibly prosecutor who truly did this case justice in this book and in his duties to the people.
Sure, it's the case for the prosecution, so it's only one side of the story.
But you have to admit, it's a pretty important side.

Someone recommended this book to me after I read In Cold Blood and loved that. And they were definitely right this was even better!
It's not a book for the faint of heart though, the murders get described in detail and these were some of the most brutal killings in American history. So seriously, you've been warned.
I knew enough about the Manson Family and the Tate-LaBianca murders before hand to know this wasn't going to be easy reading. The book is written by Vincent Bugliosi, the DA who led the prosecution on this case, so you get a lot of details about what happened and how all the evidence was gathered and put together. And if you think you know just how insane these people were, think again. There were parts in this book where I had to reread paragraphs because I thought I couldn't possibly have read that right or when I just had to put the book down and go do something else.
What I hadn't expected though was that there are also pretty funny bits in this book. Don't get me wrong there is absolutely nothing even remotely funny about the Family and these murders, but the more Bugliosi gets fed up with the LAPD or the defence lawyers or even at times the judge at the trial the more his sense of sarcasm came out. And that made for some pretty funny commentary.
My personal favourite: "As much as possible I tried to avoid embarrassing the LAPD. This wasn't always possible." (spoiler alert: they mess up. A LOT)

I'm not sure how to review this? I am not usually a true crime buff (I only like cults! So...I did, IDK, it seems pretty compelling and like a wild story but now I gotta read Chaos to find out how it's all WRONG???

I mean, what is there to say? Helter Skelter is THE most renowned book on the Manson Family murders and from my findings, it holds leagues beyond its title. If you want all encompassing insight into the Manson murders, trial, and aftermath, this book is the one for you. Vincent Bugliosi, the prosecutor for the trial of Manson and his girls, goes into exquisite detail on what exactly happened during the Tate-LaBianca murders, why, and how he managed to convict all those involved with first degree murder.
Before reading this book, there was a lot I thought I knew about the murders and motive of Manson and his Family, and a lot, after finishing the last page, I did not know until now. Throughout this very long book, I was continuously shocked, amazed, and surprised with new facts and information that led to these murders and the vicious acts carried out during and after these events. Never has a case been so horrifyingly gruesome, conducted through sheer homicidal desire and manipulation by “divine influence”, like this one.
With that being said: the one warning I have about this book is that it IS very long. It took me quite a while to finish and that is probably because it is non-fiction and has immense detail so I had to pay more attention than I usually do which means reading slower. Don’t be discouraged if you find it hard to grasp in the first few chapters. I promise if you stick to it, it will flow. It only dragged for me at the last few chapters but otherwise I was completely engrossed.
