Kept me on my toes, wasn’t the most emotional read, I didn’t feel like I was able to dive deep enough into the actual feelings of the characters. I felt like I was being told to feel instead of actually feeling. I’m not sure if this can be attributed to listening to it on audiobook. Still, it was a good book and the mother-son relationship was the strongest in the plot.

Pacing is good at building mystery, but there were superfluous storylines that are unnecessary. What was the point of the whistleblower client? The father of the husband also seemed like an afterthought and was just too tidy of a solution. Avery’s paranoia seemed too much of an overreaction given her explanation of the circumstances

This book was nothing like I expected it to be and I'm so glad.

Told through two perspectives and a slowly unravelling narrative, The Golden Couple explores human trust and deceit on what might seem at first like a superficial level but, by the end, digs deeper into the damaging affects of our publicly constructed lives.

Though I genuinely enjoyed reading this book, I do think it was longer than it needed to be given the plot. The second half explores a lot of repetitive emotions/scenes, and at times that made the tension fizzle just when it needed to be fraught. Still, I appreciated that the big twist at the end wasn't the only twist of the story, and that character development didn't only extend to the two main characters.

I'll discuss more in my book blog post, but I want to say here that I've been in extreme need of a palate cleanser for a couple months when it comes to books, and this was the perfect one. I read over half of it in one day because I quickly became obsessed with the story and the characters. Hendricks's and Pekkanen's writing styles work well together and made me want to pick up their other joint writing projects.
