The characters felt occasionally rather two-dimensional, however, and in many cases simply stood in as plot devices, or as figures to explain a certain facet of the society of the time.

Fully fleshed out characters with dysfunctional yet realistic relationships, gave me a lot of food for thought, especially on the concept of forgiveness. Incredibly informative about the horrors of war. Overall so many difficult and heavy topics but handled incredibly well.

This book was like having a front row seat to civilian life trying to navigate the Nigerian/Biafran war. And that sometimes there are no happy endings. I didn’t like the “non-linear” timeline, but it was a good book.
