absolutely no words. it made my heart break so many times and it felt so close to me, as I was able to learn more of the genocide of my people, the Biafran war and colonialism. I also loved how skewed and imperfect the characters are, it made the book richer in my opinion. I will always cherish this book and keep it in my memories.

What type of books do you tend to take your time with?
For me, it is any book that has a very specific setting that requires focus and outside knowledge. Half of a Yellow Sun takes place during the Nigerian civil war, a conflict I did not have a big knowledge base of previously. Thus, I read this book very slowly so I could take in every word and sentence and understand the gravity of the situation from the viewpoint of the characters. There was such a versatility in the characters, they really changed and expanded as people from beginning to end. Olanna and Kainene, both as individuals and in their relationship as sisters, truly stole my heart and the ending broke me because I truly saw happiness in their future. The men in this book were more conflicting as they had some problematic thoughts on women, love, and sex throughout. I much preferred the chapters told from Olanna’s point of view. Overall, I really did enjoy reading this and felt I learned a lot about the plight of the Igbo in Nigeria. It is a slow read in general though so don’t expect to speed through this one.
