I was about halfway through Half of a Yellow Sun when I realised I knew almost nothing about Biafra and the war of 1967-70.
This book does an excellent job of bringing home experiences of civil war, and highlighting how even the most secure lives can be turned upside down in a moment.
In a world where a global pandemic is suddenly a reality, and where the effects of global climate change are being increasingly felt, that is more than a little scary.
My one criticism is that the pacing of the novel is rather variable. It felt that perhaps there was too much included, and some plot points were somewhat glossed over.
But overall, would recommend, as long as you aren't feeling to anxious about the world.

Officiellement l'œuvre la plus nuancée et attachante d'Adichie. Difficile à lire de par son contenu bouleversant, certes, mais absolument nécessaire. Vraiment un coup de coeur.

It is astonishing to know that this is a work of historical fiction. Wild that I did not learn of this conflict in school or anywhere. How like life to not nearly tie a bow on the end and leave so many things a mystery. I’m now left to wonder about Kainene and Baby and Richard and Ugwu and everyone. I marveled at how interwoven I became with this family. I began to talk back to the book, laughing at the situations and pleading with Ugwu not to disobey his madam. This is one of those stories that simply stays with you.
