This book made me feel a lot. Reflecting on the devastating reality of war was something Adiche writes so well. She does a really good job at showcasing how fast war can change the lives of millions through the stark contrast between the beginning of the book where characters were living life post-independence, and the snowball of events that changed their lives forever once the civil war started. I am a bit disappointed at the ending as I wanted to know what happened to Kainene so I could mourn with the characters, but realizing that may have been Adichie’s intention - to leave the readers in a position of uncertainty that the civil war gave the characters.

Dur et touchant. J'ai beaucoup appris sans avoir l'impression d'apprendre (beaucoup de temps passé sur Wikipédia pendant cette lecture). J'ai aimé comment les histoires très personnelles permettaient d'entrer dans la grande histoire. Apprécié les détails du quotidien, notamment tous les détails culinaires. J'ai aimé Kainene.

This is a brilliantly written book that handles difficult topics well. Note that this book is not for everyone - it has graphic violence, including sexual violence, so exercise caution when reading.
Book #7 completed for Book Riot Challenge: 'Book by an author fromAfrica' It started off pretty slow, but story increased in intensity and ended sadly beautiful. Great character development and an insight into a war I knew nothing about.
