I find it difficult to express my full thoughts on this novel. It started out as a very pleasant reading experience but soon became so much more. Events soon became cruel and shocking, and even though I was expecting some violence due it taking place during the Nigerian civil war, there are scenes that still haunt me. Adichie has a way of writing funny and entertaining scenes, but also incredibly gruesome and horrible ones. In a way it made the events of the novel so much more real for me - especially because these types of things are happening right now in other parts of the world.
Another big plus of this novel are the characters. I laughed with them, I felt sorry for them, I liked and hated them. None of them are perfect, but that was what made these characters so intriguing. And even though there were a lot of characters, the novel focused mostly on the five main ones, which made it easier to understand and comprehend their complex feelings.

So far, the best book I’ve read this year. Incredible, human, historical, sad & hopeful all at the same time.
