I will absolutely seek out more by this author!
For this one- be ready for a very hard read. It’s about the devastation after an earthquake, so of course, it’s filled with a lot of trauma and very, very hard moments.
BUT- that aside- this is a compelling character study, filled with stunning imagery and some of the best writing I’ve read.
I will never read about a natural disaster and it’s aftermath the same way again- I feel I truly got an appreciation for the long-lasting devastation that occurs for days, months and years after.
Definitely a worth-while read, when you’re in the right headspace to read it. ♥️

This did not capture and hold my attention. I kept dreading picking it up. Most likely based in my mood. I may save this for another time.

I remember news stories of the earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010 but recalled few details, save for the fact the scale of damages was catastrophic. The eventual death toll, some 250,000, is an abstract statistic and this book renders human the suffering and the impact caused by the "douze."
In the past year I've also had the fortune to learn much about the history and politics of Haiti. It's a remarkable country with an astounding history. This novel furnished further understanding and appreciation of that extraordinary history and the people, both those that live there and their countrymen and women who have sought new lives elsewhere.

Although this is classed as a novel it is really a series of interconnecting short stories. Of course, I cannot remember any of the other books that I have read that are also this style!
