It was fine. The story and the writing were good but I stick by my earlier opinion, the racism just makes my skin crawl. I understand the setting of the story but it was excessive. Absolutely took away from the story, for me anyway.

Some of this book was good. The creepy factor was off the charts, and some of the scenes were legitimately scary. However, I found the "twist" about the people across the river to be disappointing and not nearly as scary as it could have been. Additionally, while some of the racism in the book is merely historical accuracy, some of it rubbed me the wrong way entirely.

This is the first werewolf book I’ve ever read and it was awesome!

The story is set in 1930’s Georgia. The Nichols just moved in and for some reason the town always sends their pigs across their river even though they can’t afford to do it. They have a meeting and convince the town folk to stop. People start being mutilated and they have to go across the river to figure out just what’s out there that the older town folk have been warning everyone about…something with sharp teeth.

It was a slow burn but the last half the book was a thrill ride and the ending was super good. Love this book and it was a perfect October read.

I have to say that this is one that I definitely had a hard time sticking with.

The story is set in the 1930's (I think). I had a dificult time staying with the actual storyline, but I think that was the goal of the author. If it was (his goal), then he did a great job weaving a tall tale.

This was a mix between mind-bender mystery and horror. So if you like that sort of story then this one will be a good one for you.

I would like to thank Net Galley and Penguin Group USA for an ARC.

I read this book as part of the "Apocalypse Whenever" Bossy Book Challenge Quarter , no theme challenge. I was assigned this book, and could not have been happier by it! This is the second [a:Christopher Buehlman|4712375|Christopher Buehlman|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1350057325p2/4712375.jpg] book I have read, Why have I not read more of his books?

Mr. Buehlman is a true artisan and craftsman when it comes to character building. But it is not just that the characters jump off the page. I FELT like I was in a post WWI Georgia town while reading this book. I was walking through the woods jumping at every noise with the characters. because this is a book set in the 20's in the south there is offensive language regarding black and to a lesser extent women. There is also a rape discussed in the book, and although it is touched on very briefly and without much detail, it could be triggering for some.

I am giving this book 5 stars, a rare thing for me.

I am torn on this one. I generally liked it, but there were bits that brought it down a star. While it tries to deal with racism and the legacy of slavery, it ends up including some racist tropes. I am not talking about the narrator's and others' use of racist language. That felt period-appropriate. It was that at least one of the plot points involved a particularly heinous racist trope - and it did not feel like it was included as a commentary on that trope, but simply using it as it has been in the past.

If you do read it, go in "blind" as part of the fun is trying to figure out what is going on.
