The book summary is quite misleading.  The historical hook serves more as an entry point to the story than an actual plot point.  The story felt like an emotional cousin to The Lottery (small town traditions, etc) - which is a pro - but the actual drama could be easily avoided, which makes the story feel a little hollow.  I'm glad I read this, but it's not one I'd put on a must-read list.
