Really 2.5, but I'm rounding up. At first I was really into this book. It seemed like an exciting fantasy world with magical creatures from lots of different folklore traditions, and an interesting heroine. But the world never really adhered and Elle's character was so poorly developed. On her first date with Luc it felt to me like she suddenly became a totally different person. Before she had been shy, introverted, struggling to hide herself and her true talents. And then suddenly she's super confident and sexually assertive.
My main issue though was that the plot never really made sense. Everything with Elle's brothers was poorly explained and unconvincing. I just never really understood why she couldn't find a nonviolent solution to her brothers' conflict.
I'm also realizing that maybe I just don't like fantasy romance. I had never really read any before and while the sex scenes are steamy I just found the writing in those scenes clunky and they didn't gel well with the rest of the book.
