I had suuuuch high hopes for this book bc the concept sounded so good and I love the world building but the characters were so boring (author tried so hard to make them morally gray but it didn’t work at all and the only morally interesting character (Yiwu) who was supposed to be a villain was barely in the book) and the romance was soooooo boring and rushed (I literally docked a star for how the relationship ended up at the end of the book it was so rushed and stupid).
There were so many plot holes — it felt like every time there was a vaguely interesting plot line, the author skipped past wrapping it up to get back to the boring romance (eg Yiwu?? the main plot of the entire first half of the book?? never wrapped up. The parents? Basically didn’t exist. Oldcastle?? So many plot points hinted at and never carried out). And the magic systems were really cool EXCEPT the right of dominion shit which was soo OP and not well fleshed out at all
The prose was nice but the dialogue was so terribly written and cringe and unbelievable, it ruined the writing overall for me. Such a huge disappointment.

Incredible. This book surprised me in so many more ways than i anticipated but the one thing I was not surprised about was that I loved it. Mia is a really brilliant storyteller and I'm so honored I got to read an early copy.
I loved the way that cultures clashed and melded together in this it's so REAL. I need more of this ASAP

Read an ARC. The world building in this book was top notch, and the characters were great. Very satisfying (and steamy) romance, but also an excellent plot with some fantastic fight scenes. A great standalone, but if there was ever a sequel set in this world I'd snap it up.
4.5 stars. This is an engaging, fun urban fantasy/ romance. I bounced between the audio and e-book versions, and Natalie Naudus narration is impeccable as always. I really liked these characters and their chemistry felt natural. Although I would have loved even more world-building, I enjoyed the medicine and magic systems.

I adored this book. I adored how unique it was, how it was both slice of life yet with high stakes plot as well. I love how it subverted expectations - there were several plot beats I was sure were going to happen and then I was so pleased when it took another direction.
The story world is unique and vibrant, and I fell in love with all of the characters. Very character focused, which I adored. I loved how long the book spent on the characters internal journeys.
I also related super hard to the themes of having to refind yourself when you are so used to your needs not being considered or you are so used to giving everything up of yourself that you don't even know who you are anymore.
Such a wonderful and charming debut. I will absolutely be reading whatever the author comes out with next!

Really interesting magic system and world but it was a little unclear on how things worked exactly. I just didn’t get that into it. The romance was nice, though, but I was just left a bit confused.
