No bravery without fear. No strength without struggle.

Incredible book! Hungry Games combined with magic?! Yes please. War Hour keeps you on the edge of your seat, reading to the very end. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

I physically could not put this book down and ended up finishing it at 2 am.

In a world where powers are earned and not born, Lysta is forced to Trial and ends up a part of a coup to take down her Court. She is whisked into the politics of the capital and thrust before all of the Courts to testify against the Lord of Valor and hopefully save the Untrialed in her city. It doesn't help that the man who brought her here, Torryn, is not what he seems, and does his best to keep as many secrets from her as possible. Lysta learns her own power as she struggles to face the reality between the Life she knew and the world of the Courts.

War Hour is everything I didn't know I needed. I went in expecting a cool fantasy with an interesting magic system I had never heard of, and it completely exceeded my expectations. I fell in love with the world and the characters, and I am actually very surprised by how much I loved the magic system. It added an extra element of surprise and excitement that I really enjoyed.

Kicking this off strong, the characters! I am such a character reader and This Book just did it so well for me. Surprisingly, I think the balance between plot and character and the influence they have on each other was really well done, which is such a hard thing to do in a big fantasy book. I absolutely loved Lysta, she felt so real to me. Her relationships with both of the main male leads were so interesting in their own way, and I'll be honest when I say I wasn't expecting the little love triangle going on but I liked it. Rarely do I like a love triangle but this one felt well executed. Evander was the obvious setup for this book, and although I could feel his twist coming I was still sitting there shocked. Like, I had high hopes, man. As for Torryn I just want to grab his shoulders and shake some sense into him, but I also understand the reason why he acts the way he does. I think I just want to hug him.

I want to briefly touch on the magic system for the sole purpose of saying this; I am surprised at how well I understood it. At first, I was running circles in my head about the different courts and the powers they have and the meaning of the trials and all this and that. But then I let go, actually read the book, and it all just fell into place. Having each court's powers related to the actual name of the court was kinda genius, and knowing exactly which Lord and Lady went to each court didn't matter that much in the end, you knew the important ones and that's all you needed. The concept of the trials themselves was what got me to request this book in the first place, and my only note is I wish we saw more of them! I wanted more! but it wouldn't have fit with the plot so I'll just wait until the next book.

War Hour is going on my permanent rec list, and I will be forcing all of my friends to read it. That is all.

I received this ARC from Lauren Loscig in exchange for an honest review.

This was a pretty good read! I loved the character development and the pronunciation page at the end. (I seriously struggle with name pronunciation some times

I loved the idea of this book. Working for powers instead of being born with them! So cool.

Cons:
— not a lot of romance or romantic tension between love interest(s).
— the trials aren’t THAT difficult.
— I honestly don’t understand why everybody was so secretive with Lysta. I think the ‘why’ needed to be added into the book.
— I feel like I didn’t know enough about the characters to get immersed into the characters. This is single POV and maybe a dual or multiple would have helped.
— the story was a little predictable.

Pros:
— it was a entertaining read.
— I think the next book will be better if the author sees what she is missing in the first book.
— it’s giving Fourth Wing and Red Queen, just not at their level. The author has potential to get there though!

Would read the next book in the series!

Bored out of my mind. The idea of the earned magical abilities, each is different for each person, was a great premise but the presentation, the plot, and the world building didn’t really excite me. I did see a note on someone else’s review indicating this ends with a plot twist and a cliffhanger but I am not interested enough to find out the twist or to read another story to see where the cliffhanger leads.
