Wow! Loved everything about this book. I loved the way she weaves in and out of stories that show what wolves, and the human relationship to them, can teach us about ourselves. I appreciated the history, the mythology, and the way she caused me to question what is really happening in prey-predator dynamics, not just with animals. Such a beautiful book that I am already recommending to many friends, and one that will continue to provoke thought in me (and more wolf dreams, likely) for months to come.
I absolutely adored this book. it was so many things at once and everything i could ever want from all of them. memoir melted into social history which melted into theory so beautifully in way which takes a depth of skill rarely seen, especially from a debut author and it was addicting in a way a lot of nonfiction struggles to grasp. many of berry's thoughts and ideas will stay with me for a long time. this book is a gift.

Some of the themes of the book are interesting. Read a great deal of OR-7 and the Yellowstone wolves and their reintroduction, so that portion of the book was old news. Some of the history around the story of wolves, and those tales we have heard forever. Where I was lost was this odd self importance in some of the memoirs. I genuinely felt for the author in some, while in others it just felt like a reach and trying to make connections that just aren’t there. I really struggled with the Woman and Wolf section. I’m sorry, but you ate poisoned vegetables that you blindly picked for food, and it’s an attack on you?

This is such a beautifully written book that entwines psychology, sociology, and zoology together. She weaves science and her story together so well. It is interesting and heartbreaking to read. But it is hopeful of how we can do better by our word and animals and how we can understand why we have used the wild for so much negative symbology throughout many cultures. I loved reading this.
This book was difficult for me because it was incredibly well written and Berry is obviously a deeply well read person. I really enjoyed her references to many interesting works and I wrote a bunch down. Otherwise, I did not overly enjoy this book. In part, that is my own fault because I think I expected this book to be something it is not. I expected it to be more about wolves than it was, and less about Berry than it is.
