a beautifully woven, multitude of a book. gave me so much to think about how to live with fear and wildness, i hope to be coming back to it again and again. thank you, erica berry, for this labour and your poetic, thoughtful approach within these pages — it was an absolute delight to read.
I enjoy books that are part memoir and part essay, but this one leans heavily into memoir territory and I would have liked a little more literary analysis and mythology. The story about food poisoning did not need quite as much background only to make a point about gendered perceptions of blame and her own guilt, but it was engaging enough I can't complain too much. Berry's personal experiences lead her into introspection about her own fears and her compassion for those of whom we are often afraid.
Wolf symbolism and their cultural significance are discussed, but most of it relates to Berry's relationship with a few specific wolves in Oregon and at a sanctuary, and her own experiences as a woman. Worth reading just to examine your own biases.

Part memoir, part cultural exploration. A really great non-fiction read that is both personal and universal. Beautifully written as well.
Completely changed the way I think about the world around me and my own fear. My new favorite book.
