This book was amazing. The last few hundred pages were a wild ride. I will be recommending to anyone. I cannot wait for the other book. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars.

The beginning almost made me DNF. I *loathe* books that do a "storyteller look back" approach. And in addition to that - I felt like it was dragging... big time. BUT, it had such good reviews and on so many book groups people were completely enamored. So I persevered. And it paid off. Big time. This book definitely had me by the throat around half way through, and the second half I could not put down. Definitely looking forward to the next in the series!

Flowery, bloody, and overall a fun raunchy time.

[b:Empire of the Vampire|56269205|Empire of the Vampire (Empire of the Vampire, #1)|Jay Kristoff|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1612450626l/56269205._SY75_.jpg|68056412] was such a phenomenal read. I truly had so much fun with it! From beginning to end it gripped me completely.

But, it was also terribly sad in several parts of the book...I was not prepared and I did tear up multiple times.

I feel like this book had so many elements of genres/franchises' that I really enjoy; and [a:Jay Kristoff|4735144|Jay Kristoff|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1310187120p2/4735144.jpg] respectfully put his twist on them all.

Without giving too much away, this book is broken up into Parts, they are referred to as "Books". There are six books in total and with each one I felt like the pages were on fire because I was flying through them. Empire of the Vampire is quite hefty, but I honestly did not feel like I read over 700 pages. The flow was absolute silk. I felt that Jay's writing is so captivating and extremely visual. The plot twists!!! Omg, they were so good. I love being taken by surprise by an Author and Jay successfully accomplished that. If I could sum up this book as a genre, I would say it's really close to a cinematic experience. There are so many ingredients in here: action, fantastical elements, dark, gruesome, a touch of romance, queer characters, villains, heroes, blood, religion, and so much more. It was just a pure, fun experience for me.

There may be some triggering topics in this book, so I think the best thing is to just read responsibly and know that this book toes the line on many realistic situations; and that may make some people uncomfortable. But, I thought that Jay did a wonderful job at creating a story, his story to make and mold how he wanted to. I would recommend this book to any fans of Fantasy/High Fantasy/SciFi genres' in film and books. Also, the books include illustrations (the ebook did a fantastic job at reflecting these images perfectly too by the way) that were so beautiful and are so impactful. I pre-ordered the next book and can not wait to see what happens next.

Hard to get into and Libby hold ran out. I’ll try again when I have more time available to listen because I was finally starting to get into it at 2hrs in!
