Definitely where Christie was starting to hit her stride with her plots.

Kept me guessing until the end. Really interesting concept and mystery but felt the pacing was a little off and would have enjoyed a bit more of a wrap up at the last part. This one seemed to end too abruptly.

First Agatha Christie!
Loved how Christie was able to create such deep and distinct characters , despite the enormous cast and short length. Hercule Poirot is my new best friend.

Exhilarating

is a major leap forward in Christie’s storytelling. The characters here are richly layered, with backstories, complex emotions, and a sense of life that makes them feel like real people rather than just plot devices.

Poirot’s character development is outstanding — calmer, more confident, and refreshingly free from the occasional condescending tone found in earlier works. His sense of humor here is playful and sarcastic without crossing into offense, which lightened the narrative and brought genuine giggles. I also appreciated how Poirot actively involved others in his investigation, sharing insights along the way, which made me as the reader feel included rather than sidelined.

Fournier was another standout — sharp, logical, and a perfect investigative partner for Poirot. If Hastings had been written with a similar maturity, it would have elevated many of the earlier stories as well.

And the plot? Absolutely brilliant. A murder committed mid-air, in full public view, with a weapon everyone could see — yet no one noticed a thing. It’s a masterclass in mystery construction, and the execution is nothing short of phenomenal. This is Christie at her finest, and it’s the first time her legendary reputation truly clicked for me.

This novel isn’t just a step forward — it’s a milestone in her career.
