*3.5 this was an ok one, not a great one. i enjoyed the sleuthing in a group, i did not enjoy the misogyny (the racism went mostly over my head in this one, i wasn't very focused).
but wasn't the hottie the murderer just in the last installment or so? i think i'm reading too many of these.
i was so sure the dentist's mirrors would be to look around the edge but nope. well, i dunno

i grew up on david suchet's poirot so it's fun to finally get around to reading the books behind all the episodes burned into my brain. this mystery was never one of my favourites, though. but the way the mystery unfolds is definitely fun. it's always funny when poirot gets implicated. it can simply only be fun for me to a point because hoity-toity europeans and brits never ages well and most of the time i'm just booing them all in their rambling. they're all insufferable and terrible. that's a familiar throughline lol

For the first time in my life my guess turned out correct xD Norman just seemed fishy AF from the start!!!
At first when I started reading this novel I couldn’t pinpoint why it felt so little like an Agatha Christie novel and then I realized; Hasting was missing. And who would have thought I would miss Hastings? As much as sometimes I want to fight him for his comments (in a friendly manner), he truly adds heart to Poirot’s adventures. The narration in this novel wasn’t bad, but I missed Hasting’s misguided theories (that many times matched mine), his interpretation of human behavior and relationships and his bickering with Poirot. I specially noted his absence at the beginning of the novel that felt too objective, too much like a recap of what happened as a journalist would have written it. For the rest of the novel I think that the narration flowed better, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing.
As Agatha Christie’s novels go, I guess this was the one for first, because for the first time my main suspect ended being the murdered. I didn’t know why or how he did it, but since Poirot made an obvious effort to keep Jane from him, I knew that Poirot suspected him and so should I. Again if we had Hastings in this novel and we saw the plot through his eyes, maybe Poirot’s intentions wouldn’t have been so noticeable, but anyway. To a certain extent, who was the culprit in this novel wasn’t very subtle as weren’t the motives for the crime, but at the same time the way the crime was committed seemed a bit too complicated and a bit incredible. So all in all, the end gave me a strange feeling.
Needless to say, I really enjoyed reading this novel and I was invested in it from beginning to end, so if I gave it less stars than my usual for a Poirot novel wasn’t because of the story itself, and had to do more with the narrator.
