One of the most interesting and strange books I have read all year

this is very well done - the gothic elements, the tense and haunted atmosphere, the desperation… the narrator’s misery was SO palpable. at times i found her painfully understandable… a girlhood spent feeling out of place, is something wrong with you? are you broken? desperately clinging onto something that doesn’t serve you, feeling so close but still having it slip through your fingers, aching for anything to happen to you just to prove that you are real… those themes alone were impressive. but also this book is about multiple meanings, duplicity, more than one thing being true at once in different but equally powerful ways. does choosing one make the other any less true? does that matter? in many ways, we have agency to choose our own interpretations… or do we? i really feel like this will linger in me for a while. it was quite memorably atmospheric… i love books with ambiguous elements narrated by unreliable young women. this was really firing on all cylinders for me

i really enjoyed some of the narrator’s descriptions of her emotions towards other people (Jude, her father etc..)

i didn‘t like the war veteran ptsd storyline though and also disliked the ending bc of it

This book pours itself in and finds all the hidden cracks and crevices and tries to burst them open. And you want to let it.
