Bill Hodges is a retired police detective and now runs an investigation agency with Holly Gibney. They’re called to a suicide scene that ties into a previous case they shared together, the Mercedes Massacre, and one of their most dangerous cases yet. At the Lakes Region Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic, Brady Hartsfield was the perpetrator of the Mercedes Massacre and has been at the clinic for five years in a vegetative state. The doctors don’t believe a complete recovery is possible, but behind the drool and blank stare, Brady is awake and has new, deadly powers that allow him to wreak havoc without ever leaving his room.

END OF WATCH marks the final installment of the Bill Hodges trilogy, and it feels a little different than its two predecessors. It’s still a crime thriller, but we have the addition of some horror/paranormal elements that are King’s signature (at least that’s what I hear).

I enjoyed catching up with the characters that I’ve previously encountered in this trilogy and am now even more interested in diving deeper into Holly’s series. It’s a bit bittersweet to know that this book finalizes this main character’s journey though. I’ve enjoyed Bill’s melancholic and inquisitive narration. While the plot focuses on the case at hand, there’s sub themes that influence Bill’s choices and thought processes, namely pain, illness, aging, and dying. These are really well integrated into the narrative and, I think, done with care.

The plot of END OF WATCH is intriguing with a technological aspect that infringes into the paranormal and adds a level of suspense and intrigue, as well as amplifying the villain of this story’s crafty and terrifying nature. I enjoyed how Bill, Holly, Jerome, Pete, and Barbara worked together to figure out what was going on – and in the knick of time – making for an action-packed and fast-paced ending!

Me gustó la historia, aunque es muy poco creíble que pueda morir alguien y seguir viva su "alma/conciencia"... con esto se cierra la historia de Bill Hodges... que triste! :(

This book ruined a series that already wasn't holding together very well.

Mr. Mercedes (while wasn't my favourite book) was an enjoyable read.

Finder's Keepers was such a random concept but kind of worked.

End of Watch felt like a direct sequel to Mr. Mercedes, which made Finder's Keepers feel completely out of place and unnecessary. It didn't even reference Finders Keeper's in a substantial way until in the last 30 pages, as if Stephen King thought 'oh yeah I forgot there was a book between these two I better say something' which feels very unlike Stephen King.

I like supernatural themes, but the fact that the book introduced supernatural elements that weren't present in the first two (I know it was referenced in the second but that was only to set up this book and felt completely forced in the narrative of Finder's Keepers), made this story completely unbelievable. Characters jumped too quickly to believing the supernatural just because the book had to wrap up.

Stephen King should have just written Mr. Mercedes and End of Watch as one novel, with a more convincing lean into the supernatural, and saved the story of Finders Keepers for a completely separate book.
