I love myself some Hades and Persephone retelling. This version was fine.
1.5/5
I regret not DNFing this one. Not particularly fun, flat prose, didn’t even enjoy it when they got together. Not for me.

Well...
Firstly, I didn't know what I was getting into when I started this book. At first I thought it was suupppeerrr rushed. You are just thrown into this world right away with not a whole lot of buildup. I wanted to be brought into it slowly, but the second chapter I felt you were expected to know what was happening. I felt the interactions with some characters were strange in the beginning, like they were old friend just continuing an old conversation, with the same banter (I guess they were). I just wished the beginning was better written.
Next, The middle part of the story wasn't bad. It felt different than what I have read in the past, the story interesting. Eventually though, I found the story to kind of maintain for a bit, not much anticipation or buildup even though what was happening could be intense. I just wanted more. I felt something with this story but just felt like we didn't get as much of the world as I would have hoped for (just rocks, rocks and more rocks).
The ending... I found to be rushed and predictable. I felt like there was all this buildup to find out the real reason for everything that was happening but it was just anticlimactic in the end. Memories are a powerful thing but I felt like once we learned the truth it felt like, "Cool. That was it? That's what all this was about?" I imagined as you are expecting this huge explosion but all that came of it was a small puff of smoke. After that I just didn't really cared what happened after and there wasn't much since it just went by so fast after that and then POOF the story was done.
Where's the rest of it? Where is the damage or the retribution? I wanted something more than just something happened, people were angry, a lot of BLAH words were said and then LOVE EVERYWHERE!

Spoiler
I hated that we learned about Persy's past as some naive stupid girl that didn't think practically, just wanted to do whatever she wanted because she was the Queen. Stupidity shouldn't have a crown.Where's the rest of it? Where is the damage or the retribution? I wanted something more than just something happened, people were angry, a lot of BLAH words were said and then LOVE EVERYWHERE!

Phenomenal book, really brought to life and made me devour it in one sitting.

I'm glad I'm able to read the complete collection on Kindle Unlimited since each book ends on a cliffhanger (of course, the author would want you to buy the next book lol).
Yes, it's another The Selection bachelor competition trope. However, unlike other books of the same trope, there is no "go on a date with the bachelor" moment. The goal of the competition is to essentially not die and maybe you'll get to marry the bachelor in the end. I give it a solid 3-stars. Not bad, but not the best thing I've ever read either. A nice break from the emotional damage caused by other books I've read recently. The mystery surrounding Persy's past with Hades drives the story forward as the two try to rekindle their past romance.
The smut is meh in my opinion. It seems like the author put in those scenes just to meet the most minimal of requirements of a romance. There are also a couple of grammatical errors that grate on this former copy editor. However, I was entertained by the characters and the storyline. It's a different take on the Persephone x Hades story and not a bad one at that.
