I've been meaning to finish this novel for awhile now (after neglecting to in a writing seminar on Nietzsche, Freud, and Marx I took two years ago to be exact, oops). I don't know why it took me so long to get into it, but once I did, this book really was an engrossing, if involved read. I would definitely recommend reading it in as close to one sitting as possible. 'When Nietzsche Wept' is pretty unlike any other novel that I've read in the sense that it's almost... instructional? There are definitely moments where the narrative stagnates and the author's style can verge on heavy-handed in certain passages (Yalom's own background as a psychiatrist and academician very clearly shines through), but the overall synthesis that slowly emerges between the titular philosopher's beliefs and the theories behind the advent of modern psychoanalysis is intriguing enough and so adeptly accomplished that any deficiencies in story-telling are arguably eclipsed.

I'm still not sure how I'd categorize it as a work, as the presentations of Nietzsche's, Breur's, and Freud's ideas are really too 21st century to be a true historical novel and Yalom's investment in creating a narrative (with some pretty sympathetic characters, fictional and historical) too obviously intentional to deem the work strictly expository writing. Either way, it was well worth tackling it again.

"Hope is essential, and who but we can sustain it?"

What a marvelous read!!!
Nietzsche, Lou Salomé, Breuer, young Freud in 1822 Vienna! What a fantastic idea by Yalom. It's beautifully written and researched. You want to laugh and cry and listen and hug every single character.

A fascinating read, combining fiction with non-fiction, exploring the intricacy of the human mind.
