I read this series out of order. I read the last one first (fall of snow) a year or two ago and loved it but am just now getting around to reading this one. I don’t normally read series like this about different couples because I get uninterested. But not with this one. I’m definitely going to be reading the second book next because I’m so invested. I haven’t even finished this one yet, I’m only halfway done but I love it. The writing is good and the characters are so well developed. There’s so much to this series and. I can’t wait to continue with the others.

For a mafia story, Rayne and Emerson are a great couple with all of the standard tropes (awful ex-boyfriends, evil competing syndicates, communication issues...). But the book was well done overall, and the rest of the family was fun to read about too.

4.5 🌶️ (4 sex scenes, extremely graphic and very long)

This book was very disappointing for me :( I was really looking forward to it, but this was a story of lust not love nor romance. The plot was sex with a tiny subplot of the Center and later
her attack/kidnaping
. About 85% of the book was extremely slow buildup to
her eventual attack
with the MMC stripping Emerson of all her freedom. He went on and on about how he liked his women submissive (but liked her fire), how he was in control, and how all her life choices had already been made for her.

For me this was not a good book. It had WAY too much smut and I skipped most of the scenes. The thing I disliked most was the fact that she was literally almost
sexually assaulted at the gala then that night he all, but kidnaps her, takes her prisoner, and basically assaults her himself. Yes I know “her body wanted it,” but she said no tried to leave and he punished her for it by spanking her.

I’m just soooo sad by what this could have been. It could have been a great story where we learned about the kids at the Center and the mafia dynamics. I would have loved to see Emerson and the siblings form actual friendships “on screen” rather than boom they are friends now.

TLDR: I wanted plot, but what I got was super long sex scenes :(
