Beautifully written.

However...

Nothing was explained.

Childlike language and a protagonist who was basically a child so I did not get the love interest at all.

The majority of the two main characters' arguments made absolutely no sense.

Just... Didn't work for me at all. I was bored and considered giving up several times.

The first half was quite boring due to the lack of world building

3.5 / 5 stars. I liked the book, but it was sometimes confusing to follow and lacked in plot. There were several times I got bored because of the repetition: Orlaith does the same things over and over and gets the same answers over and over and nothing seems to change much from day to day. I kept waiting for things to pick up and trying to figure out what made some of my friends so hyped up about this book. It finally does pick up towards the end but I have so many more questions than answers.

Orlaith is easily likeable and relatable but her choices are questionable. In some ways she's smart, feisty, and strong, but in others she's so naive it hurts. Her "best friend" seems to have ulterior motives and her feelings for Rhysand seem misplaced. More than anything throughout the book I kept wanting someone to just tell Orlaith what was happening. She makes so many bad choices that could have different outcomes if someone had just involved her in things better or told her what was happening during the events of this book.

I have a love/hate relationship with Rhysand. I'm not sure what his story is or why he keeps denying Orlaith when it seems like they might want the same thing, but his treatment of her made me so mad. He's basically Orlaith's entire world but we know nothing about him other than what he looks like and that she gives him her blood and that they have a connection of some kind. He constantly denies her and then locks her in her tower instead of talking to her yet there were parts that made me feel like he might have some redeeming qualities Spoiler like when we find out he's been having swords made one at a time of varying strengths to make sure Orlaith can protect herself and help her move forward through her PTSD triggers (sounds). I just don't know enough about him or the situation or WHY he's doing what he is to truly grasp his character and I can't decide if he'd be a good match for Orlaith or not.

Am I going to read the next book? It's likely, but only to find out if we finally get more answers. I'm honestly rooting for Orlaith and want to see the growth of her character.
