This is gory and I personally found parts of it very funny. What I do NOT get is why Fred's mother found her to be so evil from infancy, although there ARE clear indications later in her childhood that she's a sick, twisted weirdo. Nor do I get why Winifred's mother referred to her father as the Devil. An unlikeable boor, yes. Nobody Fred encounters in the book is at all likeable. They're all pretty insufferable people who deserve a lot of petty vitriol, but there's nothing there to explain the level of ensuing violence inflicted upon them. Thus, the only explanation is, Winifred really is a psycho. Also, there are some...events (Original Baby, Miss Lamb, apparently others for which we don't get the full details)...that stretch credibility (you're telling me NOBODY noticed?) On the plus side, Winifred has a great voice, and the book has vivid imagery. I could see this as an A24 movie. This isn't great literature, but it is good fun if you like a bit of the old ultraviolence and books about women being completely unhinged.

Another Gothic-horror historical fiction book…I think I might have a type.

Only 200 pages long, Victorian Psycho is about a governess named Winifred Notty, the peak definition of an unreliable narrator. She narrates her numerous murders, which she suspiciously gets away with. She kills children, bites earlobes and horses. What a charming lady!

Do you like your horror stories absolutely feral? Do you like your gothic stories to be inverted where the terror of the house is the protagonist, and you know her every bonkers thought? Can you manage insane (INSANE) amounts of straight-faced blood and gore?

If you said no to any of the above then absolutely do not read this book. It will horrify you and you will hate it.
If you're thinking sure I could handle some pervasion then you are in for a treat.

The writing is slick and fast-paced. There is no sympathy for Winnifred Notty, but none for her wards or guests of Endsor House either. It also pokes fun at the period and its own genre.

I'm not sure what it says about me that I really enjoyed it but I don't know what else to call it apart from feral.

I received an eARC of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
