The world building and characters of this book are wonderful, but the tone reels between silly humor and extreme gravity without quite nailing the blend of the two. The jarring tone shifts can make it difficult to stay in the book, although this is admittedly a matter of personal taste. I enjoyed the back third, where the book settled into a more consistent vibe, more than the rest. Best for Discworld devotees rather than those looking for more classic fantasy. People who have read the early Discworld books, which suffer somewhat similar issues, should have no issues whatsoever.
