Amazing all round, although I kept feeling very demotivated since some parts seemed to drag along but that could be due to me coming out of a very severe reading slump.
I feel disappointed considering the hype around this book.
I was definitely hooked hence the three stars but the writing was so bad. I didn’t feel like there was any tension building in either the action or the romance elements. It was so stop/start-y it felt like there was no flow. The dialogue and inner monologue was so cringey I got second hand embarrassment.
As for the characters, didn’t really like any of them. I cared more about the dragons than any of the humans…
Overall it felt like I was reading divergent fanfic with a discount Rhysand + dragons.

Amazing world building and characterization, allowed me to read with a ferocious appetite because I always wanted to know what happened. World design is at times so complex that I have to refer to outside sources to understand. Plot felt predictable at times with obvious influences from other YA authors and stories popularized in the 2010s. Overall an amazing read that I highly recommend, but was riddled with tropes and predictability at times, leaving it satisfying, but not earth shattering.

OH. MY. CHRIST.
WHAT A BOOK.
i would feel worse about not picking it up sooner except i’ve picked it up at the perfect time with onyx storm being released in three weeks time.
violet and xaden my LOVES. the tension, the pining, the ANGST. ugh i love it give me MORE. enemies to hesitant friends to lovers only for burning betrayal? i adore them completely, xaden especially. what a man. his levels of loyalty, commitment, bravery and devotion? insane in the best way possible. he’s most certainly not the man i thought he would be - not the man violet thought he would be either - but his character is so well fleshed and we’re only on book one. i am personally ecstatic to read the rest of this series. xaden riorson, ruthless wing leader? yes. xaden riorson, soft hearted lover? also yes. (will rip you to shreds if you even lay a finger on his girl though)
there’s so many things to love about violet and xaden but one of my key favourites is xaden’s nickname of violence for violet. his inner monologue of her and her inner monologue of him, just…chef’s kiss.
one thing i HATED was that violet was just a tad (a lot) of a pick me girl. “i’m so small” girl you are two inches smaller than me STOP IT.
fun fact - i sobbed during this book THREE times. MY POOR BABY LIAM. my angel. my sweet boy. rebecca yarros COUNT YOUR DAYS. going in, i knew liam’s fate and i thought i was prepared. i was WOEFULLY unprepared. tragically so. we are not talking a little bit of a sob when his fate came to pass, we are talking fat tears rolling down my face, chest aching sob. the same towards the end of the book when violet shut xaden out. she had her reasons to and i don’t blame her but hearing it from xaden’s perspective shattered me. and also dylan on the parapet?? i thought we were gonna get a nice little gang of dylan, rhiannon and violet all hanging out at basgiath AND THEN HE JUST DIES ON THE PARAPET??? yarros is not afraid to kill people off and that *terrifies* me.
also… THE LAST LINE OF THE BOOK??? HELLO???? I HAD A FEELING BUT MY JAW DROPPED. rebecca yarros, your plot twists are just too good queen.
dain aetos. COUNT. YOUR. DAYS. i’ll hold my hands up, i loved dain at first. he was kind and i can get on board with a childhood friends to lovers trope. he seemed cute, is the best word for it. WHAT HE DIDN’T SEEM LIKE WAS A RATTY BARE FACED LIAR AND A TRAITOR. BUT THAT’S WHAT HE IS. i cannot even explain properly the RAGE in my veins at his existence by the end of the book. i knew he was searching her memories this whole damn book, as soon as he mentioned his power, i knew. (i’m taking away points in violet’s character rating because GIRL you knew of his power and let him touch your face every damn time he saw you) but to go ahead and betray violet like that, TO BETRAY LIAM (i know he didn’t really have reason to care about liam but my boy is dead and dain is to blame) is just… there’s no redemption. i don’t want a dain redemption arc, i don’t care for a dain redemption arc and i better not get one.
jack barlowe…rest in MISERY. i hated that guy and when violet ended him? i cheered so loud i think i woke the dog up. GOOD RIDDANCE. an utterly hateable character and i LOVE when authors do that right. sometimes you’ll have characters there you’re supposed to hate but there’s just not enough there to hate them with. but jack barlowe? exquisitely written to be the bane of my existence - and obviously the bane of violet’s.
the comedy in fourth wing really elevated it for me. the bantering from ridoc and rhiannon especially, it just made it feel REAL. some books, the comedy is done so badly and it’s just terrible, but this i felt was not like that. bonus points for sgaeyl being a sarcastic queen, love her so much. give me more of sgaeyl.
in conclusion, fourth wing had me screaming, crying, laughing, staying up wayyy past my bed time. most notably xaden’s chapters (it’s like christmas all over again) ESPECIALLY the “my Violence.” too good. i fear even the queen of nothing (my first and only fantasy five star of the year) is not reaching this level of enjoyment. fourth wing, you hold the firm honour of being my highest rated five star read of 2024. i would give you six stars if i could. god BLESS.
