The first 30% felt extremely bland, with too much focus on setting up the world and characters at the expense of pacing and engagement. The protagonist’s internal monologues felt repetitive, and the story lacked the spark that keeps you hooked early on. However, once the plot began to pick up, the book transformed into an exhilarating ride. The training sequences, interpersonal conflicts, and dragon-related twists added layers of excitement that kept me turning the pages.

Yarros does a great job building a world that feels immersive, and the relationships—romantic and otherwise—added emotional weight to the story. While the initial slog prevents this from being a top-tier fantasy for me, the latter half more than makes up for it with thrilling battles and unexpected turns.

I am giving it 5 stars because I enjoyed reading this so much. However, I’ve also never read a book with so many errors in the writing… Like does no one proof read? And I’m not usually one to be picky of writing quality, but like the double words and incorrect words were obviously distracting.
