Dragons, beautiful world, beautiful men, mid magic system but overall entertaining!
Yes, Violet was basically Mare Barrow and Xaden was basically Rhysand, but it was super vibey and I enjoyed every single second of it.
WOW! What an adventure. I never read fantasy books or anything like this. I’m so glad my book group decided to read this. I was hesitant at first but this was incredible!
I couldn’t put this book down. It was a long read and I raced through it as if it was only 100 pages. The story keeps you drawn in the entire time. There was so much going on all the time, I had to force myself to stop reading at points.
These characters are amazing, some I loved some I hated. Some I rooted for and others I wanted to throw in front of a dragon.
Yarros did an amazing job describing the setting. It was always descriptive and painted quite the picture. The map at the beginning helped with visualizing where the characters were at the college.
I loved the disability representation. Violet clearly has a chronic illness and was still able to overcome so many struggles and be successful.
There was some romance in this book but it wasn’t overwhelming. The story was primarily about survival and overcoming challenges.
That twist at the end was totally unexpected! Already have the next two books ready to go. Can’t believe I almost didn’t read this!

1⭐ I had such high hopes for this book! However, the characters were extremely shallow. I couldn't really make a connection with any of them and didn't care what happened to them. The writing was horrible. It felt like a ninth-grader sharing their school drama... In the worst way possible.
**Edit: A friend asked me to continue, so I did and ended up finishing the book. The writing didn't get any better, and it's all pretty predictable, but I did end up enjoying the story. Here's to hoping this will be like ACOTAR where the next book is better. I'd give 1.5 if able, but I'll bump it up to 2⭐ for the story.
