I didn't expect to love this as much as I did. I certainly didn't expect to listen to the audiobook twice in roughly two months. Violet isn't a perfect heroine, but she has tenacity and I like to read about an imperfect main character. Between the dry sarcasm of Tairn, the friendships, and the hot wingleader, it's a story I enjoy going back to.

somebody PLEASE PUT ME OUT OF MY MISERY. i can’t even. i need to sue everyone who recommended me this for damages to my mental health. how Rebecca Yarros(?) has her own dedicated readers is beyond me.

if you liked this, recognize it’s bad, but it’s your guilty pleasure? great! good for you! my problem is with people calling this “the greatest book”… no it’s not. not even close. if you think it is, genuinely, PLEASE read more and try out different genres. maybe pick up a classic or two. i don’t know.

i’ve been a long-time fantasy enjoyer. i take it anyway i can: book, tv, movie, etc. reading this BASTARDIZATION of the fantasy genre has enraged me. “it’s not that serious” IT IS TO ME!!!!

let’s start with Rebecca’s writing. one word: LAZY. i thought it was fucking ridiculous that she used the laziest writing trope known to man: character narrates the history of the world to us instead of being shown over the course of the story. like cmon. the excuse was “she recites facts when she’s nervous” is not good enough. at that point, less than 20 pages in, i KNEW i would hate it. so i continued!!! only to find more of Rebecca’s stellar writing :D!! run on sentences. middle grade level writing. gratuitous “fucks”. shitty “banter
“, if you can even call it that. disabled character is only disabled for the point of being small and weak. any meaningful conversations about disability are thrown out the window. “disability rep” put a bullet in my head please.

next. characters. STOP with the “he’s poc” and not elaborating. it comes off really gross. i get that he’s from a fantasy world but Rebecca isn’t. like what kind of poc? pacific islander? south asian? north african? i don’t think she knows, because Xaden Riorson was only made poc later for rep. because he’s a white man. you can’t tell me you named a character “Xaden Riorson” and had anything but a white man in mind. just very disingenuous stuff. i’m white and ignorant myself, but at least i’m not putting rep in my books to look good. moving onto miss Violet. i’m assuming she has ehlers danlos or however you spell that. she is disabled for the soul purpose of being small and weak. that is it. there’s no meaningful conversations on disability and how it affects her, because why would there be? the rest of the cast is forgettable and i do not remember them.

anyway i’m just angry. i spent no money, so no loss for me. book recs for people who hated this and want something better ;) (fantasy bc romance is not my fav)
- anything by Naomi Novik
- the Evernight Trilogy by Katherine Arden
- Legendborn by Tracy Deonn for poc rep and an exploration of how colonialism and slavery still haunt us today
- anything by Holly Black
- anything by V. E. Schwab
- the Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea
- anything by R. F. Kuang

truly a GOT YA book! took me a 1/3 of the book to get into it, but then it took off! it was a fun read, fantasy is not what I usually read but was a nice start to it

Sure, it has some of the tropes with a strong woman lead that fantasy has been doing for a bit, but I kinda like them, and this did have some twists that I didn't see coming. And I like looking at the cover art, not going to lie about that. Book two's art is even better.

Just reread to prep for the new book. I used the dramatization on hoopla and it was great!
