By this point, I'm invested. Stakes are higher. Danger is present and I was legit worried through most of this book about whether Pet & her 3 Psychos were going to make it to the end of this book. I binge-read this one. Much more emotionally intense. Make sure book 4 is downloaded and ready!

This one gets a little weird. I have liked how these books are written, but this one seems a bit different than the others. There’s a lot of physicality in terms of affection, violence and just weird interactions with the Pet. I’m not entirely sure what to think of this book, but I am intrigued and I will continue reading.

The author also over explains things in the beginning as if we hadn’t read the first two books. I would put this a little under 4 stars this time.

I binged this series, one book after another; without a breath between. Which means I didn’t pause to review each one individually. So, this review will be for all 10 books collectively.

I quite enjoyed this. I’ve not come across a lot of urban fantasy set in Tasmania and I really appreciated the little splashes of normal culture that are only notable because I’m listening to it as an outsider—like referring to someone looking like they come from the mainland or going to Woolies for groceries, or the regional slang (“You’ve got kangaroos in the top paddock” was a notable favorite). I loved it and the narrator—Zehra Jane Naqvi— did an amazing job bringing this to life (especially when you factor a Korean-speaking character in too).

Pet has such an endearing personality and voice and her three psychos kept me interested. I love the found family aspect of the series. Pet found herself a whole new family…or created it rather. She’s the glue that holds them together.

I will admit that quite a lot is left unexplained in the world in the beginning. So, I just had to force myself to be comfortable with a certain amount of not knowing that I’d have preferred not to. But it was still a lot of fun, with a slow-building reveal over 10 books. (And I felt a lot firmer in my understandings by the end.)

The characters remained consistent throughout, the over-arching plot ties nicely together, and the whole thing ends well. I did regret that some of the bigger characters seemed to have a lot less time on page, even if their importance wasn’t diminished, as the series progressed. (I missed them and the group’s banter.) And while certain aspects of the ending were sad, there was a wonderful sense of forgiveness and acceptance of human foibles.

All in all, for a bit of absurdist, urban fantasy fun, this worked a treat and I’ll be looking for more from this author.

I wasn't sure about this series to start with, but hey, it was on Kindle Unlimited and I needed a book to read. Plus, that cover is pretty eye-catching in a dark and gritty urban fantasy kind-of-way. In spite of the blurb promising that it wasn't weird weird, it sounded weird weird. Was this some sort of BDSM reverse harem? Not that I'm knocking it. If that's your thing, you do you, boo.

In this book we find out a bit more about the shady entity enmeshed in the police department that our group discovered in last story--aptly named simply the Upper Management.

description

As suspected--this group might be controlled by Behindkind, and may have several nefarious plots brewing behind the scenes. However, this time around Upper Management is trying to personally mess with Team Psycho- and the detective- through some underhanded means.

After Athelas goes missing Zero tries his best to keep everyone safe while searching for answers. Meanwhile Pet is given some restrictions, Jinyoung is still being a sulky pain, and Tuatu is trying to work his way around the set-up from the previous book.

With all of this chaos going on Pet has to be even more sneaky in order to stay on the case!
