This story was a nice change of pace for me. The main character is introduced to us having already been through some very difficult experiences, and I found it surprisingly realistic how all of it has shaped him mentally and physically. He is also in his mid 30s and cannot solve every problem by fighting through it. This was a stark contrast to some fantasy books I have read, in which 14 year olds somehow kill scores of grown men in combat.

Many people have listed this book as adventurous but I would not agree. It is set in a fantasy world where there is adventure, but most of this story is not your typical fantasy adventure tale. There is tension and conflict and it did keep me interested, but most of the story happens in one castle. The action does pick up a lot at the end.

I could have done without men expressing sexual interest in girls too young for them. All things considered it is a very small part of the book. Also, to be fair, it is realistic behavior for a medieval society. And unfortunately some men still think it's acceptable in our modern world. But I don't enjoy reading it

I've really enjoyed what I've read of this book, and I wish I could finish it. Discussion of illness is not something I can handle much of, though, and apparently it plays a large role in the rest of the story. For the sake of my mental health I need to stop here. I would highly recommend the story if that's something you can handle, though.
