Adena deserved better than the ending of Powerless, and this just makes it worse.
This was heartbreaking, and I knew it would be. Unless Mak appears in a later book, the only thing this novella is good for is making me cry.

I’m not sure, this one just felt like it was lacking that tension and cheekiness of Lauren’s writing style. I was expecting more to happen prior to when Adena gets summoned to work at the castle. It just felt a little hollow to me.
I bawled at the end of Powerless. I felt disconnected in the lead up of Powerful.

UGH LAUREN ROBERTS I FRICKING SOBBED ON THE BUS TO UNI
I knew Adena was dead, and I knew this book was just a novella about the life of Adena after Paedyn was selected for the godforsaken Trials up until Adena's death in the last of those horrendous things. But GOODNESS DID I NOT EXPECT TO HURT SO BAD. I'm so upset at the fact that Makoto will forever think that anyone who gets close to him DIES. UGH. LIKE???
SO FRICKING UPSETTING. anyways.
The only things stopping this from being a 5-star is the entire buildup to Adena and Makoto's relationship. I literally thought he hated her with so much adamancy that his being physically close and making comments about her beauty and how he's so obsessed with her got me scared in the beginning. Makoto also reminded me a lot of Kai; I felt he needed more character. Their banter was too familiar and too similar.
Anyways. Point being. I sobbed. AND THE WAY THE BOOK ENDED. HELLOO???

I loved this book so much, I love Adena and Mak so so much, the ending made me sob for 10 minutes straight. Lauren Roberts is so so talented and it was written so disgustingly detailed I love it.
