BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN. PHEW WELL DONE!
I had the pleasure of receiving a physical ARC copy of Mrs. Hawthorne's debut novel "Of Mountains and Seas" and all I can say is WOW!
Without giving anything away, this story is a quest and fight between two parties in a world where one party has to keep their identity hidden while living their lives through a world that is predominately made up of the other party. Secrets get exposed, people are not who they think they are, and new identities get revealed. Omg its so much going on but its so good!
The writing was so beautifully written and detailed, I could visually see every element described within this story. I would say I had a tough time getting into the story initially due to the different POV and my brain getting confused. It took me a while to really remember who was and why they mattered within the story.
Overall, once the POV started to intertwine it happened so smoothly I couldn't put this book down!
So grateful for this opportunity to read this book early and congrats!

Of Mountains and Seas by Emily Renk Hawthorne is a thrilling fantasy adventure. Davis Sun, born without magic in a shapeshifter family, partners with Iris Bai, who has a mysterious illness. They discover a mine with magic-transferring stones in a small California town, setting off events that could reveal Davis's hidden past.
Key Tropes:
Outcast Hero: Davis is the odd one out in his magical family.
Magic Transfer: Stones in the cave can give people magic.
Mysterious Illness: Iris's illness adds mystery.
Small Town Secrets: The town hides big secrets.
Quest for Power: Both characters seek to change their fates.
Emily Renk Hawthorne's writing is vivid and immersive, with detailed descriptions that bring the fantasy world to life. The story shifts between past and present, adding depth though I admit there were moments I was confused but wraps up nicely. Overall, it's a fun and engaging read with a mix of magic, mystery, and personal quests. If you enjoy complex characters and a bit of a thriller vibe, you'll probably like this one!
The pacing is moderate to fast, keeping you hooked with its suspenseful plot and well-developed characters.
Thank you so much, Emily Renk Hawthorne, for sending me a physical ARC! I’m thrilled to have read this, and if this becomes a series, I’d be very excited to continue the journey!
