Really struggled to get through this book. Tone is way off. Sounds like a middle age woman pretending to be born in the 2000s.
A sweet and cosy read overall but there are moments of pure grief. Apple talks about being awkward and not really fitting in at school and this awkwardness definitely comes across and I could really relate. It's teenage 'not quite knowing' where you fit along with Apple spending the summer with her maternal relatives she had never met. Her mother, from the Turtle Mountain Ojibwe Reservation in North Dakota, died when Apple was born and she lives with her White father in Minneapolis.
At first the cultural shifts come thick and fast but Apple is open to learning and listening and she quickly bonds with her extended maternal family members. There are moments of fright and there isn't a happy ending, no spoilers, but it reads as a slice of life, no pun intended, and I learned a lot about contemporary Native American experience. I highly recommend it for middle grade readers and I think older readers would enjoy it as well.

This is a phenomenal book. The search for identity in Appleās story is told in such a way that anyone can identify with her. It may be a YA novel, but it is rich with traditions and pieces of Native culture. There are so many pieces to dig into and talk about. This is a must read for Middle School and High School teachers. Well done Dawn!
