I know I said I wouldn't continue this series, but I couldn't stay away and ended up awarding 5 stars. Go figure. The characters are worth the occasional frustrating plot device. Ian Rutledge works to solve the brutal murder of an entire family in the kitchen of their farm, while a blizzard rages outside. The young boy (who is missing) is the only survivor and is under suspicion of killing his entire family. Once again, the disruption of the country by WWI plays a major role in the schemes and outcomes of the participants and it is not obvious who is guilty until the bitter end.

More unanswered questions, though one from a previous installment was partially answered. The mystery at the heart of this one was good, bit it was a rather slow one with the lack of clues and evidence.

Make sure you are curled up a warm blanket for this one. The mystery is average but the description of cold will make you pull your blanket closer.

I love this series. It is written by a mother and son duo and I think that gives so much emotional depth to it. The Inspector is struggling with shell shock and memories of WWI as he attempts to find his place back in the normal world of Scotland Yard and find a way to have a fairly normal life outside of it. Since he has a ghost living in his head, it ain't easy.
Colorful characters, vivid descriptions of the lesser known countryside of Britain and Scotland, and convoluted plots made more complex by people who lie for many reasons, most of it not at all related to murder.
I was not sure at all who was the culprit in this one in particular.
