Listened to the audiobook since I read this as a child and much of it went over my head. A great introduction to historical epidemics.

The book was very boring and slow paced. The plot didn’t make much sense and was very predictable. Mattie did get a little bit of character development at the end because of the traumatic events she’s been through, but she’s still very much the same person from the beginning. The deaths weren’t very impactful, as the characters that died weren’t very likable or never even showed up. Nathaniel Benson was a very unnecessary character and the book would have done so much better without him.
