A fun read! Some of the stories are more capers than mysteries, without real clues to trace or a sense of "Wow!" at the solution. But the writing is lively and funny.

'"What is truth?” said jesting Pilate. No wonder, since it is so completely unbelievable...’

My first foray into Wimsey’s short stories, and I am mostly impressed. Sayers offers quite a variety, from the gothic in “The Abominable History of the Man with Copper Fingers", which reminded me of an old, horror movie from the 1930s (?), to making you solve a fiendish crossword (I couldn't). Come to think of it, Dorothy was being rather hard on her readers, for instance expecting them to know French in order to solve one of the cases presented here. Wimsey got his share too, sent on an undercover mission for 2 years! That one did make me smile actually.

In all, these were very entertaining, with only a couple that left me ambivalent. Finally, what of the titles? These were hilarious in their convolutedness and puns. Fun though :O)

This one tips the scale. It is funny, charming, violent, dark, witty, pure Dorothy. It is a smart mystery. I know I will read it again.

My beloved Corolla is partly beloved because it is old enough to sport both a cd and a cassette deck, which means I can dig into the library's dark recesses and listen to great offerings like this one. Ian Carmichael was the reader, I believe, and he was terrific; Sayers's writing is top notch as well. The stories vary in setting, style, and time period, but they're all pre-Harriet and all flat-out wonderful. I've read the book numerous times, but haven't listened to it for a long time if ever. HIGHLY recommended as escapist, classist, Anglophile fun!
