This was a very enjoyable historical romance, with wonderfully developed characters, a strong sense of time and place, fantastic interpersonal connections / chemistry, and an interesting plot with a nice mixture of introspection and action. There were a lot of emotional ups and downs. The emotions were well wrought, and I did find myself tearing up once or twice. The yo-yoing of emotions (of both characters and myself) felt a bit too much like author manipulation at times, but still, a very strong book which I highly recommend to fans of the genre.
