I've enjoyed other stories from Avi before, so I had pretty high expectations for this book, but for me this one fell a little short. The story is interesting - a boy tries to save a rat from extermination and the matter gets complicated when he realizes his own life might be on the line - and the fact that his adversary is the angel Gabriel adds an unexpected twist. I read it aloud to my kids, though, and it couldn't quite keep their attention, although, maybe they are a little older than this books target readers (12 and 13)? However, my thirteen-year-old son enjoyed the video game references, and they all liked cracking the code of the phone number.
The story of a boy who decides to try to save a rat from an exterminator. Some of the people who listened to the story with me found the ending confusing. I thought it could have been handled a little more fluidly, but I liked the tale overall.
a boy finds himself fighting to save the life of a rat in his apartment complex during Christmas vacation.
Found this at my parent's house over Xmas and saw I had bought it at the Scholastic book fair in 2005 :')
this was a bizarre, weird, little book but I liked it lol.
(I don't think it fits with other books I rated a 4 but)

Eric can't figure out how to entertain himself and whines about being bored during Winter Break. He inexplicably decides to help the creepy exterminator, and wander around a dark basement for no apparent reason. Then the story goes from bad to worse. The only thing I liked about this story is .
Spoiler
that the rat lives in the end
A bit underwhelming. Gets repetitive and the final climax was over before it started
This was the worst book I ever read in elementary school. I wrote a pretty scathing book report for it in fourth grade.
