Cercare di recensire questo libro non è semplice data la sua generale complessità, dal tipo di scrittura alla trama, Il circo della notte è tutt'altro che un semplice fantasy che racconta la storia di due maghi in competizione tra loro.
Ho trovato il libro molto lento, troppo descrittivo per i miei gusti una descrizione che a tratti è fin troppo metaforica. E' narrato in terza persona cosa che, non so se per preferenze personali, non mi ha permesso di immergermi appieno nella storia o di affezionarmi a nessuno dei personaggi.
La descrizione è molto ingannevole il che è molto ironico pensandoci, viene presentato come una storia di magia, azione, una storia d'amore che pare avvincente e mistero. Delusa nell'avere appreso che il mistero è, forse, l'unica parte accurata.
La trama si spezza in luoghi e tempi che spesso mi hanno confusa, si sovrappongono tra loro alcune volte fin troppo risultando irregolari e difficili da seguire. Non ho percepito la magia trasudare dal libro salvo alcuni spezzoni dove l'ho ritrovata più nelle parole che nell'effettivo atto.
Sui personaggi principali c'è da fare una distinzione: Celia è stata una persona che ho apprezzato, ma non mi sono sentita legata a lei in nessun momento. Marco l'ho trovato insopportabile alcune volte e noioso le altre.
La loro storia d'amore, sempre promessa nella presentazione del libro, è assolutamente priva di fondamenta. Nonostante ho riconosciuto che il loro legame è stato rafforzato dalla magia (seppur diversa) e dalla competizione, oltre non hanno avuto nessun senso. Inutile sottolineare che questo libro non è un enemies-to lovers, Celia e Marco non provano mai disprezzo l'una per l'altro, solo curiosità.
I personaggi scondari sono stati tutti... secondari. Forse solo i gemelli mi hanno lasciato un'impressione più decisiva. Snervati, odiosi, da prendere a schiaffi sono state le "figure paterne" dei protagonisti: due uomini il cui ego è stato causa di chissà quante sofferenze per motivi futili e un'arroganza smisurata.
La competizione da questi ultimi creata è nata da una stupida diatriba su chi avesse ragione, chi era il più potente, ma no non potevano semplicemente vivere con le loro stupide e diverse opinioni oppure sfidarsi tra loro, no, dovevano coinvolgere dei bambini innocenti in questo shitshow. Una competizione che non ha regole perché di base è semplicemente il capriccio di due uomini che non sanno fare gli adulti.
Ci sarebbero molte altre dinamiche che non mi sono chiare o che non mi sono piaciute e mi sembra di aver elencato solo le parti negative di questo libro quando non posso negare che ci sono stati attimi in cui mi ha coinvolta.

I honestly wasn’t a huge fan of this book, but I definitely think it just didn’t match with my taste. To start with what I did like, the writing itself is beautiful, the circus was magical and mesmerising with incredible descriptions that really portrayed the whimsy. I adored some of the characters individually, especially Poppet and Widget. Their personalities were adorable, and I loved seeing the magic from their perspectives.
I think the reason I didn’t love this was the lack of action. The pacing was extremely slow, and i really struggled to carry on reading. I eventually switched to the audiobook just to get though it quickly. There were some beautifully strung sentences, the prose was intoxicating, but I just needed more excitement I guess! I did really like the way it ended ✨
Deffo recommend this for people who love a slower read, something you can take your time with.
(My experience with this makes me want to reread Circe, I feel like my taste might have changed 😅)
