i might come back to this one but the pacing for this is slower than i wanted, and i have other books more promising than this. i still love the premise, setting & characters, book is a solid 4.5 stars right now, i just don’t have the mindset to read this atm.

Features a character who agrees to help the main characters up until "the time is right" to figure their shit out. When "the time is right", there is no warning or indication why. Otherwise, everything smart in the book was stellar.

I have conflicting feelings about this book. It was not enjoyable for me to read and I was very confused for most of it, but I realized that is how you are meant to feel. It sprawls across many years and many characters. The first part introduces a lot of threads and details that get woven together in the end, but you don’t know what is important to pay attention to until the end. This is frustrating but intentional. You are meant to be left in the dark with the characters. If you’re having a hard time getting into it, you’re not alone. As readers, we are used to being able to see the big picture right away. Don’t expect that here.
While it wasn’t enjoyable for me to read, that doesn’t mean it is a bad book. It gave me a lot to think about which raised my opinion of it. Looking back at it I can see that it is actually well thought out. You just have to get through the beginning to see that every little thing ties into the larger, quite complicated, plot.  If you like elaborate descriptive writing with very little character depth, you will love this book (all vibes, very little plot).

Good book! Some beautiful passages with a fun plotting with bits that kept me guessing. Nothing that completely moved  me or changed my life, but I believe that was because this book is more ‘good, cool vibes’ with less of a concrete plot. This would be something to bare in mind, but overall, a pretty good read!

The entire first part of this book nearly put me off of it because of the child abuse. This is not a happy story, but at the end it is a loving one. The descriptions of the tents, the joy, longing, and wonder where absolutely magical.

"A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world. His punishment? And his reward." —Oscar Wilde, The Critical as Artist

Undeniably beautiful writing in a turn of the century fairytale that is groundedly gritty and soaringly ethereal. I don't care for circuses, but it was the exact right venue for this story. This one didn't knock me off my feet quite as much as The Starless Sea, which I read first and with no expectations. Partly, I think, because I wasn't as enamored with Marco as I maybe was supposed to be and I wasn't as satisfied with the ending here, but mostly because:
"The finest of pleasure are always the unexpected ones."

Definitely recommend for fans of The Starless Sea and Alix Harrow's Ten Thousand Doors of January.
