challenging dark reflective slow-paced

Very bookmarkable, it's a thought-provoking reflection on the author's culture and time. He questions the inevitability of Progress, particularly its seeming-inextricable link with the West. And then there's this theory on how beauty gets defined: "The quality that we call beauty... must always grow from the realities of life, and our ancestors, forced to live in dark rooms, presently came to discover beauty in shadows, ultimately to guide shadows towards beauty’s ends."

Tough to agree with everything he posits, but that's not what makes a good book (even a nonfiction one).

Me fascina todo lo que tiene que ver con el modo distintivo en que se viven las cosas en Japón. Esa sutileza inasible de muchas de sus tradiciones, arquitectura, modos de conducirse, vestimenta, alimentación, etc.
El “ensayo”, más bien testimonio susurrado íntimamente al lector, da fe de todo ello y de la textura de los bols, la pátina envejecida de la madera, el papel por donde se atenúa la luz; y sobre todo las sombras que todo lo envuelven en una calidez misteriosa que emana de ese mundo lleno de rituales geniales y sencillos, esenciales, distintos e incomprensibles pero fascinantes.
