This was good but it was almost too metaphorical and convoluted for me. I know that a lot people like books that leave questioning, but I personally like to know what has been happening by the end of the book. Maybe I’m just a slightly surface level reader but I struggle to compose my thoughts if I can’t point to something and say “this is happening. This is real”. So in that way I was a little let down by the ending but the content was great! I was disturbed, believe me, but Yoder is great at making me understand the characters decisions. Everything having to do with motherhood and the magic of the female body was amazing, I just wish there were less innuendos.

Stepford Wives meets werewolf myth? Unreliable narrator, magical realism, multi-level marketing schemes, righteous feminist rage, performance art...what didn't I love?

Really solid and weird! We love a story of a woman’s rage and grief manifesting physically. Some of the writing was a bit too MFA for me, an idiot who was stupid enough to get an MFA, and felt at times like I was reading something in workshop, but still a fun read.

“Nightbitch” is like an A-24 movie in book form — dark, twisted, and utterly bizarre.
Going into this is an experience. There’s no traditional dialogue or exposition. It’s entirely stream of consciousness, fully immersing the reader in the ways of The Mother, our narrator, as she descends into a deep state of post-partum dissociation and creative revelation. While it took me a moment to feel grounded with the style and pacing, I really enjoyed it as The Mother ultimately convinces us she is a dog.
The format reminds me of an extremely campy retelling of “I Who Have Never Known Men,” if it was set in 21st century America with first-world problems. Props to the author for truly getting into the head of our narrator. I started to feel ALL the rage of The Mother at her hopeless situation, her negligent husband, and her child with his constant clinginess and temper tantrums. Overall it’s a very niche story appealing to those who like weird fic.
